The Quarter Finals – WCO Predictions

June 28th, 2014 by · No Comments · Features, Football

Now the group games have concluded, and we know the line ups in the Round of 16, who’s going to make it through that stage to become the 2014 Quarter Finalists. We look ahead to the four games.

1. France v. Germany

France and Germany are the only European teams to be playing near their potential so should overcome both Nigeria and Algeria. The only remaining African teams just managed to claim second place in their respective groups. Should be a cracker but the midday kick off in Rio on the 4th July will do neither team any favours.

2. Brazil v. Colombia

Brazil struggled against Mexico so might have some issues with Chile but are improving. WCO expect them to squeek through to meet flying Colombia once they have dispatched a Suarez-less Uruguay. That match on 4th July, 21:00 [GMT] in Fortaleza will be Brazil’s biggest test of the tournament. If they survive that they will be favourites to win the cup.

3. Belgium v. Argentina

Messi and chums are hitting their stride with maximum points and six goals. They should be too strong for a fast improving Switzerland. Belgium also took full points to top group H but did so in less convincing style winning all three by one goal margins. Belgium will be too strong for USA who took advantage of Ghana’s mutiny on the eve of the last game, and Portugal’s needless loss of Pepe in their finrst game. USA were lucky to get through and that luck will run out on 1st June, in Salvador. Who’s luck will be in on the 5th July [17:00 GMT] in Brasília?

4. Netherlands v. Costa Rica

The Dutch face a formidable challenge against a Mexico team that held Brazil and gave them a fright, indeed only failing to top the group ahead of Brazil on goal difference.  They have only conceded one goal but Netherlands should just have enough attacking talent to go through. They will then meet Costa Rica [5th July, 21:00 GMT, Salvador] who first face a Greece team who somehow managed to beat Ivory Coast in the last group game, with a penalty in the 93rd minute.
