FA – Out of Office

June 29th, 2010 by · No Comments · Features, Football

In a strategic master-stroke the FA announced that the decision about the future of Fabio Capello will be postponed for two weeks. That’s about the only thing they have got right in years.

Two weeks is about enough time for the rabid press and public to be distracted by Murray winning Wimbledon. It also allows time for the afore-mentioned to witness Semi Finals starring Argentina v. Spain and, hopefully, Ghana v. Holland.

The former will be a reminder that England had no chance of winning the tournament, nor of getting past the Quarter finals. The later will be a perfect coup for the tournament organizers. It would a confirmation for FIFA that holding the tournament in Africa was the right decision. The Africans can get behind Ghana while the Afrikaans population can bask in the success of the ‘homeland’.

For FA chairman David Richards a waiting game is cute move. The public sentiment for a quick sacking will fade as it becomes clear that the alternatives offer no long-term remedy. According to a Guardian poll the second favorite, behind Capello [on 28%], is Harry Redknapp [19%]. That’s 9 major titles and a year of international experience against 1 FA cup win against Cardiff.

Next in the poll is Roy Hodgson, no longer available now that Liverpool have confirmed they are happy to meet Fulham’s compensation fee of £2.5m. At 12% comes David Beckham and with that we move into the realm of the ridiculous. Beckham would be a match on the petrol of the current squad factions.

So, in a couple of weeks time the FA will unpack their suitcases, put the Speedos back in the draw, and announce that Capello is the right man to re-build an England team.

In 2006 the Germans, worried by the teams performance set out to re-build a team from the ground up. The results are starting to be seen, four years later, in this tournament. For the FA to take a similar long-term view would be welcome, but unlikely. The issue of £12m compo is probably the main driver but if the outcome is the same then that will do me.
