Don’t Panic – Last Stand for Dads Army

June 2nd, 2010 by · 1 Comment · Features, Football

The baby of the England squad was dropped yesterday, only to be replaced, by a 28 year old. Hard to believe that SWP is that old but he’s actually younger than the average age of the squad [29!]. I’ve no idea how Capello’s mind works but there may be something to be said about bringing together a group of players who know that this is their only/last chance on the biggest stage in world sport.

Stupid Boy

At least Walcott has a crack at 2, possibly 3, future tournaments. For James [39], Carragher, Heskey [both 32], Ferdinand, Upson, Lampard [all 31] and Gerrard [30] this is the end of the road as far as World Cups go. The 29 year olds; King, Terry, Crouch, Cole Ashley and Barry, are in the same boat. At 28 Warrnock, Joe Cole and Carrick are borderline.

Goalkeepers aside, only 4 players; Rooney, Milner, Lennon and Glen Johnson, would expect to join Walcott in the squad in Brazil 2014. This is the oldest England squad for a World Cup, ever.

As the Guardian would have it Capello may be counting on ‘the power of desperation’. Personally, I don’t think he had any choice. The squad is pretty much the best 23 available with no major omissions due to injury – for once.

You could argue for Beckham, but he would have been warming the bench, and would have meant leaving out SWP, Lennon or even Cole. All are capable of significantly more impact. And, with his age, England may have been disqualified and forced to play in the ‘Seniors’.

Will you be around later for your usual?

The Sun thinks that Walcott was left out for not following orders to stay wide. Captain Capello won’t stand for that and his squad of veterans now have no illusions that anyone is safe from the drop. So expect louche, layed-back, Sergeant Rio and spivvy Corporal Terry to be on their best behaviour.

Who do you think you are kidding mr.capello if you think your boys can run? Indeed they are the only 23 realistically that could have gone. It is our best squad. I think it will be along rebuild to 2018 where we will win it on home soil as hosts again. You heard it here first folks.
