Mexico wave goodbye to the malignant seven

After last nights game against Mexico there can be no doubt about who goes and who stays.

If God didn't want them sheared, he would not have made them sheep

Assuming that Capello takes 3 goalkeepers, and he’d be the only coach not to, the seven selected themselves last night whatever happens against Japan on Sunday.

At full back it was a chance to decide who understudies Cole and Johnson. With Carragher back to cover Johnson that left only the Left Back position. Baines did enough so out goes 1. Warnock.

In central defense it was again 4 from 5 with Terry, Ferdinand and Upson certainties. Dawson would go if King looked fragile. He looked solid and is now a certainty. Out with number 2. Dawson.

Central Midfield has Gerrard, Lampard and Milner nailed-on. If Barry is fit for Sunday then he goes. If not Carrick will go. Carrick’s passing looked poor last night but he has better control and vision, on a good day, than Huddlestone. 3. Parker and 4. Huddlestone for the chop.

Wide Midfield is starting to look like our strongest area. Walcott was Walcott, impact, pace and control but lacking consistency when delivering a final ball. Rooney was doing his nut but managing not to show it too much. Lennon did great with the time available so sorry number 5. Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Wide left is a simple choice of Joe Cole covered by Adam Johnson, who did fine with the few minutes he had. Expect him to play at least 45 minutes against Japan.

Forwards? Capello obviously likes the variety that Crouch can offer, plays Defoe whenever he can and, well, Rooney doesn’t need discussing. So Heskey or Bent? Personally I would have used the younger, more mobile, Bent in a few games to see if he could support Rooney as well as Heskey has in the past. Capello hasn’t taken that opportunity so I think he’ll go with Heskey – shame. Number 6. Bent.

That leaves the only maybe – Carrick versus Gareth Barry’s ankle. News should be released today but even if he’s declared fit I’d expect Capello to play him on Sunday to have one last look.
