Bafana Bafana rank [outsiders]

April 29th, 2010 by · No Comments · Betting, Football

South Africa are now considered so bad that, despite home advantage, they are available at 150-1 to win the tournament and a whopping 16-1 just to finish as the best African team. That’s 5th of 6 teams with only Algeria worse. Even that has more to do with Algeria being in a group with USA and England. They are also tipped to lose all their group games against Mexico [6-4], Uruguay [13-10] and France [4-5 on].

Despite beating Jamaica 2-0 this week Banana plummeted further down the FIFA rankings to 90 – a 12 year low. Surprise Moriri’s 51st minute goal and another by Siyabonga Nomvete handed coach Carlos Alberto Parreira only his second win in his second spell in charge of the team.

Based on the last 4 years results the FIFA ranking are a far from perfect measure but it does throw up some interesting trends. South Africa has not only continued to slide this year but is now ranked as only 21st in Africa. That’s lower than regional heavyweights like Gabon and Benin. To add insult it now sits just below it’s poor neighbor Mozambique.

So why is the richest country in Africa, and a soccer mad one at that, so bad? All roads lead to the usual suspects – administrative shambles and instability at the top. By the time the World Cup finishes, and Parreira leaves the post, South Africa will have had 14 coaches in 14 years. That’s a symptom of the main issue, the warring factions in SAFA: one led by Irvin Khoza, and the other led by Danny Jordaan. They currently have a truce while the tournament takes place but will be back at it as soon as the broadcasters and fans have packed up.

As Dan Gillespie in The South African writes ‘Unfortunately, it is too late to fix anything for this year’s World Cup, but maybe, with the right guidance, Bafana could be good enough to qualify by the time the 2014 World Cup rolls around’.

How about that for pre-World Cup hysteria [take note England].
