Seeding and Qualifiers

September 15th, 2009 by · No Comments · Features, Football

The first-round groups will be determined in Cape Town on 4 December with the 8 highest ranked teams allocated to a group each. As hosts, South Africa are guaranteed a top seeding. The other seven seeds are usually allocated through a system that takes account of results from previous tournaments and current Fifa rankings.

England have reached the last two World Cup quarter-finals and were ranked seventh in the latest Fifa list, which was published this month. Fabio Capello, therefore, can look forward to a position among the top eight. Brazil and Spain will also get a top seeding, while Italy, Germany, Argentina and France will probably get one if they make it through their current qualifying campaigns. You can keep up with the latest news at the Qualifiers page at FIFAs website.
